The "systems" aspect of the Greenwich II house are dauntingly complicated. Let's start with someting simple: Here, I am rebuilding the Cat5 telephonic/ethernet cabling, starting with just two phones.

As near as I can determine, the many house phone jacks were wired to the basement, but never connected, just left in a pile. I have mounted a new 66B connecting block to distribute the phone signals. Having labels would have been too easy. I am tracing the lines using a Fluke tone generator.

I've now added most of the traceable Cat5 phone cabling to my connecting block. There are still many "mystery cables." Things will get neater as I go on.

Kris alerted me to the need to move an electrical outlet out of the way of a new partition going into bonus room entry hall. "Sure" I thought, "how hard can that be?" It turns out that within the short 16-inch move to the right I ran into hot and cold PEX lines and the dryer vent duct for the adjacent laundry. I worked everything out as shown here and the carpentry could proceed. I added another steel nail plate to the stud to protect the electrical wires before the sheetrock was replaced.

Yipes! Today is the first day that heat is needed and there is no heat in the 2nd floor bedrooms. This particular zone is one that has been "subdivided" into individual room zones using this #$%& overly-sophisticated Honeywell "duct damper control system." Good grief, the heating system already had NINE zones, yet somebody wanted even MORE? This might mean some real headaches for me.

I queried the HZ322 system's diagnostic routine and got this message: "DATS NOT INSTALLED." Is this some programer's idea of a joke, or is there a D.A.T. System that is not working?

I checked every accessible connection on the thermostats, the HZ322 and the air handler control panel. I then headed to the basement to check the furnace area circuitry. Here are the control panels for the heating zones.

Taking the covers off of those panels reveals a lot of potential for things to go wrong. The zone not working is Zone 9, on the far right. Right away, I spotted someting amiss...

... Yes, why isn't that white 24VAC wire connected to the last terminal? That stupid wire is just hanging out all by itself. Logically, it should be providing power to the power relay for hot water circulator pump #9. So I connected it and waited. (Note: Zones 1 to 6 are in the first panel, so these three shown here are actually Zones 7, 8 and 9.) Was that wire intentionally, or accidentally, disconnected ? We may never know.

Soon, the Zone 9 circulator pump's blue power light came on and the pump rumbled to a start. Still, no heat was getting upstairs. Nuts! I suspect that Zone 9 may have been nonfunctional for at least a year. The zone plumbing had so much air and sediment in it that the pump could not push the hot water to the attic air handler. I flushed the Zone 9 plumbing sludge out and now, everything works. There is heat in the 2nd floor bedrooms.

Uh, not so fast. Now I have the opposite problem: Zone 9 (zone 3 here) circulator never stops running, even when no heat is being requested. I suspect that the #$%& duct damper sub-zoning system in the attic is not properly connected. Perhaps this is why someone had disconnected the wire here. I'll have to get to the bottom of this.
